Boy, is it hot here! But hey, I’m not complaining. The summer is finally here, and for me this is the time to sit back and enjoy some holiday time. I have to say for some reason this year, it feels as if I have been moving in 40 different directions, and I haven’t been as good about taking the time to practice Self Care. Yes, slap the hand!
Although, self care is something we should be practicing all year round, for some reason summer really represents that time for me…the time to slow down, take a few more breaks and really enjoy doing…well nothing.
Ah, doing nothing what a concept! How many of us actually take the time to do nothing…nothing at all. And what I mean by nothing at all is no meetings, no email, no phone…just sitting around enjoying good company, good weather…and sure a great daiquiri…why not?
I know it’s been a while for me, but I intend to take full advantage of it real soon. Vacation time is just around the corner, and I’m like a sprinter at the gate, waiting for that whistle to blow. And trust me, when that whistle blows, I will be leaving the meetings, the phones and the emails in the dust.
There’s something so freeing about that first day of vacation, the thought of not having to do anything…and enjoying the freedom of doing nothing.
So, my nothing is going to look a little bit like this:
- A week at the cottage
- Taking sunset cruises with the family
- Roasting marshmallows by the fire –Yummy!
- Having a glass of wine, while I watch a good movie
- Throwing my rod in the water and catching a HUGE fish…and then of course releasing it!
- Going into town and buying the best butter tarts I have ever tasted in my life
- Having nightly BBQ’s and not having to worry about washing dirty pots – Yeah!
- Sitting on the dock with my feet in the water watching the boats in the distance…. heaven!
Ah, I tell ya, this doing nothing is looking better all the time….can’t wait to get started!!!
So, tell me –what does your nothing look like?

Hey Michelle I know you don’t worry about washing pots…that’s hubby’s job! LOL
I have to say that while I start each day sitting quietly on my front porch reading, journaling, listening and watching the birds (yes I am a bird lover!) I have not had a do nothing vacation in a long time. I was thinking about this the other day that for the past few years my vacations have been motorcycle trips.
You’d think these would be pretty easy just sitting on the back watching the scenary but they’re not. They are work. Getting all your clothes for 2 weeks packed into a very, very small space, bungy cording it on and off the bike every day, getting all your gear on – boots, chaps, helmet etc., climbing on and off the bike numerous times a day, stopping for gas every 2 hours, sitting still and balanced on the bike, not able to stretch and move around and feeling road grime at the end of the day. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing, and I mean nothing like the feel and sound of a Harley beneath you, the wind (and bugs) in your face, feeling the change in temperature of your surroundings, smelling the forests, oceans, BBQ’s and yes the cow pastures and the different view you get from a bike. But it is work.
My idea of nothing is being on a beach somewhere, Tofino BC or Bermuda, it does not matter. Laying poolside and sipping a virgin Pina Coloda, walking on the beach and feeling the sand between my toes, the water on my legs, body surfing in the waves, enjoying sunsets, having clean sheets, my bed made for me and dinner served, no dishes.
Right now I need a whole lot of nothing! Enjoy yours
Love and hugs,
MLA
