I find it funny how people react to birthdays. Mine is coming up this week Friday the 13th(of all dates) and quite honestly it doesn’t bother me one bit. Yes, I’m one year older and no I’m not one of those individuals who stopped counting at 29. I’m fine with letting everyone know that I’m turning 37…a few steps from 40. And trust me my family members are quite vigil about reminding me of this.
“Oh boy, a few more years and you’ll be the BIG 4-0.”
As if it’s a death sentence…like all of a sudden at 40 I’m going to shrivel up and have to use a walker to get around. The fact is I’m okay with getting older, I’m looking forward to my fabulous 40’s and although not there yet, I have no intention of fighting it!
As with every one of my birthdays, my husband and son start gauging pretty early on for possible birthday presents. Trust me; I’m not one of those individuals who say “All I need is your love, that’s the best present in the world.” Sweet, but not me! I like to make them work for it.
“So, Mom, what do you want for your birthday” my 16 year old son asks.
“Not sure, haven’t really thought about it” I say, knowing exactly the reaction I’m about to get.
“Well how are we suppose to figure out what you want, if you don’t even know what you want, geez, come on throw us an idea here” he responds in his typical 16 year old manner.
“How about this?” I said, “Think about the past year, add up every moment of stress you caused me, and then buy me a present based on that.” I responded laughingly, “I guess I should be expecting that Porsche then right?”
Of course he didn’t think it was so funny, I on the other hand laughed my butt off, and was joined by my husband. I snapped my neck around and looked at him, and said “that goes for you too!” He immediately stopped laughing and I swear I could hear the “wheels” turning in his head. I’m guessing that’s one shiny new Porsche and a 5 carat princess cut diamond ring coming my way! LOL! Yah…right!
I know, not your typical mom, wife response…but hey it’s my birthday and if I want to torture them a wee bit, I think I’m due that…LOL!
No but seriously, this is the way it is every year at my birthday. My son getting frustrated with me because I’m not making it easy for him and telling him the exact thing I want for my birthday, my husband, not really having a clue either, because he’s trying to think of that “perfect” thing and the fact is I really don’t care what they get me. I will love whatever they come up with.
Honestly I have more fun watching them trying to slyly figure out what to get me then I do opening up any of my presents. I know it’s a cliché, but it really is the thought that counts and they really do put a lot of thought into it…and I don’t make it easy for them.
Boy I love my birthdays
