The other day a song came on the radio and my son said “oh, that’s mine and Nikki’s song” Nikki being his girlfriend of all of 6 months. Talk about blast from the past!  His declaration immediately brought me back to my years in high school when music played a much larger role in my life than what it does today.  Back then everyone had a song, a representation of a relationship, a personal dilemma, an obstacle overcome.   These were personal theme songs, a song that spoke to us so intensely we would listen to it over and over and over again.

I began replaying some of my old personal theme songs, remember Cyndi Lauper’s, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!  – Yep my personal theme song, back in the day!  In the early part of high school, that song really hit a core with me.  For me it was a representation of being a girl (yeah girl power), having more freedoms and not taking life so seriously.

You know it’s funny, even now, it still peaks something within me each time I listen to it.  Of course, on a much different level than back in high school, but nonetheless I can still relate.

I think music can be an extremely powerful tool.  It can evoke such strong emotion in us, that in some cases it sparks something within us that drives us forward, to overcome the odds, to survive, to succeed.

I think this can apply not only to our personal lives but our business lives as well.   A song that represents you and your business, lyrics which motivate you in reaching your goals, a battle cry of sorts that make you want to work harder, play harder and enjoy the benefits of both.

Today our lives are much different than they were back in high school, but the power of music can still have the same affect.  So do me a favour, pull out some of those old records, cassette tapes and CD’s and remember your old personal theme songs….then find a new one that represents who you are today!

Rock on!!!
